Resume workshop

This resume peer review is based on Johnson-Sheehan’s revision discussion–the idea is that based on the time you have to revise, you need to approach it like triage: the most vital issues first.

1. Because this is (at least for my class) the first peer review, the students need to understand the revision/review process. Reading and discussing the accompanying Johnson-Sheehan chapter on revision is helpful. Emphasize that the most important thing to consider right now are the global issues. Usage/mechanics will be the last thing to consider.

2. Using a document camera, either review (as a class) a student draft from a previous semester or a brave student’s draft from this semester. Emphasize the global issues, the issues addressed at the top of the attached workshop sheet. Remind them that mechanics/usage/grammar issues are vital, but not yet.

3. Give students time to work on the attached sheet. The boxes are for lists of strengths (+) or areas that need work (-).

4. It may be helpful to spot check how students are doing–you could utilize that document camera again. Sometimes students feel inadequate to review another’s resume, but by spending enough time coming to a consensus about various resumes, students can gain greater confidence.

5. This workshop is more about learning how to approach revision (their own and others’) than about the resume, though they will learn more about resumes as well.
